5. Keep the Car Running: Neon Bible: The Arcade Fire

There are some songs that you listen to the first time and you are immediately drawn to it partly because of its emotional force and partly because you know it is layers deep.  I willingly admit I don’t yet understand Keep the Car Running but I keep coming back to it.  This is part of the songs power, at its core there is mystery – and we humans are drawn to mystery.  There is an apocalyptic pulse to it, and whatever is coming, you’d better keep the car running…  And yet, with its dark brooding future, there is a lightness, an anticipation.  As with any great story or piece of art its mystery furnishes enough points of contact to drawn you in –  I mean who of us hasn’t felt “There is a fear I keep so deep/knew its name since before I could speak.”
