4. There is a Fountain Filled with Blood: Purity of Heart is to Will One Thing: The Welcome Wagon

I like my hymns soaked in blood…

This William Cowper hymn was beautifully re-cast by The Welcome Wagon. If you don’t know anything about Cowper, you might enjoy a modest reading of his life, he is a fascinating figure whose dark internal struggles are counterbalanced by his incredible ability to draw the sinners gaze to Christ. If you don’t know anything about The Welcome Wagon go buy an album right now! This song comes off of a follow up EP to their majestic Welcome to the Welcome Wagon LP. I have listened to this song a countless number of times and still feel like I haven’t listened to it enough. I keep returning to this line “The dying thief rejoiced to see/that fountain in his day/and there may I, though vile as he/wash all my sins away.” Drink deep of that fountain filled with blood.

Not to get all polemical but this one goes out to all those out there to all those substitutionary atonement haters!

I am already foreseeing your top three. For anyone who knows you well enough there are definitely some essentials missing on this list that I know will be here soon.
